One of the few novels about the Brontes which doesn’t depict Branwell as a wastrel and “ne’er-do-well” (he is actually a quite fascinating character in the novel) and the author has made good use of the available biographical material. The Reverend Patrick Bronte also comes across as a sympathetic character, with his tireless campaigns to improve the lot of his parishioners. Some of the escapades are pure fiction, such as when Emily impersonates a man in order to accompany her brother to The Black Bull, and the contention that Arthur Bell Nicholls may have had darker motives in proposing to Charlotte will inevitably provoke controversy. All in all, a riveting read. I would recommend it – and not just for serious students of the Brontes.

There have been a lot of Bronte spinoffs, and many of them are terrible. However this book by Ruth Thomas is exceptionally well-written, and the characters and historical scenes (some of them invented) are wholly convincing. Highly recommended.

  3. Della Della says:

Superb evocation of the lives of the Brontes. The blend of fiction and biography works very well, and I enjoyed it immensely
