1st Read April 20102nd Read August 2015Original ReviewThis is the 5th book in the Shifters series so it is very difficult to review without giving spoilers for previous books If you re new to the series I strongly recommend you don t read this review as this series really should be read in order why not check out the reviews for Stray instead This is my favourite Urban Fantasy series though so I d definitely recommend you check it out This book continues the story just a couple of weeks 1st Read April 20102nd Read August 2015Original ReviewThis is the 5th book in the Shifters series so it is very difficult to review without giving spoilers for previous books If you re new to the series I strongly recommend you don t read this review as this series really should be read in order why not check out the reviews for Stray instead This is my favourite Urban Fantasy series though so I d definitely recommend you check it out This book continues the story just a couple of weeks after the ending of Prey Faythe and the rest of her Pride are still devastated by the loss of an important Pride member and are preparing to go to war to get their revenge and stop Calvin Malone s attempt to take over the Pride Council But attack comes in an unexpected form when they are set upon by the Thunderbirds a Flight of bird shifters who are determined to destroy the Pride The Pride have no idea why they are under attack and they are at a major disadvantage when their enemy can fly they can t afford to losemembers if they are going to have a chance in the upcoming war When the Thunderbirds manage to kidnap Kaci it falls to Faythe to discover what they want and to figure out a way to rescue her I have been a massive fan of the Shifters series ever since I read Stray but with each book I ve been amazed that it has managed to be better than the last Shift didn t disappoint and I was drawn into Faythe s world from the very first page I love the way Faythe s character has grown throughout the series she still has flaws and makes mistakes but she is truly starting to show her full potential Shift is action packed from the word go and kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page I really didn t know how the book was going to end and there were some great twists that I wasn t expecting I have no idea how the relationship issues between Faythe, Marc Jace will be resolved after the events of the last book I feel for each of the characters and just can t see a way to give all three of them a happy ending The style of Rachel Vincent s writing has created an absorbing world that hooks you from the moment you pick up the book I don t think I ve ever felt so emotionally invested in the outcome of a series before and for that reason I am both longing for and dreading the final book Alpha I m sure Rachel will manage to surpass my expectations but I really don t want my journey with Faythe, Marc the Pride to come to an end If you haven t tried this series yet then I really recommend you go out and get a copy of Stray today I m sure you ll be as hooked as I am.______________________2nd ReadI m still totally addicted to this series on my second read through I have to admit I was evenirritated by the triangle this time though, this is the only series I can think of where the triangle got worse in the later books Luckily I already know who she ends up with because I remember that being extra stressful the first time around LOL.This series is really raising my blood pressure, the pack politics is quite stressful and half of the Territorial Council are complete and utter bastards There are a couple of people in particular that I m desperate to see dead but I know I have someheartbreak in store before that will happen

I was going to try to write this review without spoilers from the previous books in this series, but I honestly don t know how to do it Too much has happened that built up to this book to leave them out I will avoid spoilers about the plot content of Shift and tread cautiously with previous books, avoiding spoilers about the main mystery suspense plot of each book Several people have asked if they can read this book without reading the previous books my answer is yes, you could if you reall I was going to try to write this review without spoilers from the previous books in this series, but I honestly don t know how to do it Too much has happened that built up to this book to leave them out I will avoid spoilers about the plot content of Shift and tread cautiously with previous books, avoiding spoilers about the main mystery suspense plot of each book Several people have asked if they can read this book without reading the previous books my answer is yes, you could if you really wanted to But I agree with Patti over at Book Addict that if you do you are missing the full impact of the story The buildup and history of these characters add so much I would avoid it if you can You won t be sorry.Fans of this series know what a hugely important and controversial book Prey, book 4, was Besides the devastating death of a well loved character, there was shocking and totally hot smexing between Jace and Faythe Fans have high expectations of Shift and it delivers on every one of them.Simply put, Faythe Sanders is not the same girl she used to be Book 1, Stray, introduces her as a mouthy, defiant, and somewhat whiney college student Her father is Alpha of South Central pride of werecats, and tabbies female werecats are rare So incredibly rare that they are prized and used as pawns in greedy attempts at controlling all the werecat prides Initially, Faythe wants none of this system and insists she can have a life of her own outside of the pride, away from her family This series is very much about the growth of Faythe and her finding her own path within the system her natural werecat instincts are longing for.By the time we get to Shift Faythe is a strong, determined, intelligent, and forward thinking tabby She no longer denies who she is or what her status means, but instead works to redefine it and make it her own She is done shying away from the tough choices She is the first female enforcer for a pride and thrives on the decisions that will lead her to become the first female Alpha Yet, she is still flawed, she still makes mistakes Faythe has to face the consequences of one of those mistakes in Shift. The tension between Marc, Faythe, and Jace in this book is overwhelming For most of this series there has been tension between Marc and Faythe, could she ever just let go and be with him I was rooting for him, he was strong and dependable and would let Faythe lead in her own way He surprises me in Shift and it only adds to my admiration of his character arc.Jace was always the fun, but flirty guy who made the readers laugh I never expected him to grow so much over such a short period of time The events in Prey, changed him drastically He is no longer willing to be the fun flirty guy who s intentions aren t taken seriously He is making a serious attempt to win Faythe s heart in Shift and I find myself swooning over his new found Alpha ness Faith is going to have to choose and if being with both of them isn t an option, I don t know what I want for her With so much of this book riding on the relationship between Jace and Marc and Faythe I was worried the overall plot of the werecat pride conflicts would be lost I should have known better Rachel Vincent has written a dynamic, fast paced, action driven story that had me hanging on every word The South Central pride faces new dangers from both a flight of Thunderbird shifters and Carl Malone s Pride, intent on gaining control of the pride council Once again Faythe and her enforcers are fighting for their lives and tough decisions have to be made. This is probably one of the longest reviews I have written and the sad thing is that I could keep on writing I finished the book this morning and have been unable to think of anything but it all day long My heart is torn, my nerves are shot, and my emotions are a mess in that way that you can only get from being invested in a great book Where do they go from here With only one book in the series left, Alpha can t come soon enough Rachel Vincent s Shifter series is a roller coaster ride of suspense and emotion that I don t want to get off

5 Shift Stars Ok ok I listened via audiobook, I loved the book it was great it goes with the story but the bird people speak Eeeeek grates on my nerves something bad Mark and Faythe have some talking to do Jase and Faythe have some talking to do A lot of words need to be spoken Malone is taking strides against the Pride, and I think the next book shit is going to hit the fan Faythe has some pretty bad injuries in this book and you gotta feel for her pain I mean OUCH KC is going to have 5 Shift Stars Ok ok I listened via audiobook, I loved the book it was great it goes with the story but the bird people speak Eeeeek grates on my nerves something bad Mark and Faythe have some talking to do Jase and Faythe have some talking to do A lot of words need to be spoken Malone is taking strides against the Pride, and I think the next book shit is going to hit the fan Faythe has some pretty bad injuries in this book and you gotta feel for her pain I mean OUCH KC is going to have some struggles mentally with everything she has endured But she is a strong female and I think she will pull through just fine Very much enjoyed this book and can t wait to start the next I am going to be sad when its over You don t have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here spoiler alert SPOILER ALERT Okay, I ve got to say it I am losing all respect for this series There I said it, so sue me As one of the few Tabbies female were cats in existence Faythe Sanders has gone through a lot to get to where she is today She has had to grow up and make some hard choices in the previous four books of this series and had appeared like she was developing into a strong forward thinking woman tabby that is being groomed to lead her pride as the first female spoiler alert SPOILER ALERT Okay, I ve got to say it I am losing all respect for this series There I said it, so sue me As one of the few Tabbies female were cats in existence Faythe Sanders has gone through a lot to get to where she is today She has had to grow up and make some hard choices in the previous four books of this series and had appeared like she was developing into a strong forward thinking woman tabby that is being groomed to lead her pride as the first female alpha With the help and unconditional support of Marc, her father s right hand cat and Faythe s lover mate she seems to be set to do great things. However, here is where I am having issues, in books 4 and 5 Faythe is seen making horrible personal decisions and then is unable to own up to her mistakes Come on If she can t be honest with the ones she claims to love desperately gag then how is she going to be a trustworthy alpha In book 4 Faythe screws around on Marc with Jace one of her pride mates Jace has always had a crush on her and is one of those flirty guys that you love to have around but would never seriously consider having a real relationship with In all of the previous books Jace is a laid back cat who has shown no real alpha tendencies until after he sleeps with Faythe the wonder tabby WTF Now in book 5 he is suddenly challenging Marc at every turn and poor Marc has no idea why Yeah, she hasn t told him that she boinked Jace in a moment of alcohol induced horniness Oh, but wait they were comforting each other because her brother just got killed and Marc was missing So your man is missing and your brother s dead so why not celebrate by getting wasted and totally betraying the one man who seems to love you despite your childish shit.So now she doesn t want to give up Jace and she can t bring herself to hurt Marc by clueing him in because she doesn t want to lose him either On top of everything else they have were bird people showing up trying to kidnap her and the other tabbies, while killing every male were cat they can find to avenge the death of one of their own, moronically named Finn All because a rival alpha who wants the magic tabbies all to himself has told these birdbrains that Faythes pride were the ones who were guilty of killing their bird buddy. In between attacks Faythe and Jace keep sharing meaningful looks and sneaking off to have heated debates about their so called relationship Now I have to say that Jace is trying to be a standup guy and wants to tell Marc what they did but the tabby in denial just won t own up to it Yes, sir, she s prime alpha material all right.Anyway, the were birds manage to kill a few of the were cats and are able to hold the entire pride, plus a few other visiting alphas, hostage on their own land and in their own house The kicker is they are supposed to be ranchers, but they only have one measly handgun on the entire ranch Because these cats don t like guns again WTF Someone has the bright idea that all the tabbies will be safer somewhere else and Faythe is charged with getting herself, Kaci a recently adopted young tabby, Manx a traumatized declawed tabby and Manx s infant to safety Yeah, that is so going to work Yep, you guessed it they get caught and Faythe and Kaci are spirited away to the badass thunderbirds nest bird house whatever Faythe is told that she must prove her prides innocence in two days or Kaci will be killed.Hmmm what s a tabby to do I know let s call daddy Who promptly sends help in the form of wait for it , Jace and Marc Dang, I just didn t see that one comin Can you say road trip Jace is snippy the whole way, Faythe can t stop getting injured and Marc is still clueless Some badly planned escapades ensue, Faythe gets hurt again, and finally, yes finally Marc finds out the big secret.Okay, by this point in the book I am getting really pissed I like Marc, he s hot, he s dependable and he will do anything to keep his woman safe He s given her time to adjust to her new role in their pride and has asked her to marry him So what does this possessive alpha male do when he finds out his woman slept with someone else, who is within ass kickin distance no less The don t touch my woman or I will smear you on the pavement, me Tarzan, badass gives some pathetic speech about getting the job done and goes silent Well almost silent, he throws some vague threats Jaces way and tells Faythe that she has to choose, that s about it Faythe tearfully apologizes, assuring Marc that she still desperately loves him but privately is frantically trying to figure a way to keep them both By now I am firmly rooting for the bird people to kill them all. They manage to get the proof they need by kidnapping the were cat that really killed the birdman and handing him over in exchange for the Kaci He of course promptly grabs one of the were bird children and demands to be let go He takes off with his hostage into the woods Faythe and Marc give chase Marc manages to rip out his throat while Faythe grabs the baby thus saving the day Mamma and baby bird are reunited, the bad dudes body is handed over to be consumed eaten by the bird people and now the were birds owe the were cats a favor for saving the cute little baby nice, right The last two books have almost put me off the whole series entirely, which is a shame because this story arc had such promise But come on, what pride is going to be able to hold up their heads at any were conference when they get their asses handed to them by skinny bird people I don t care if they do have razor sharp claws and can fly Get some damn guns and go huntin Do you think the wolves would be hiding in the house waiting to get picked off Hell no, they d be preparing to kick bird butt If the birds can beat you up then what are you going to do when the were mice decide they wanna piece of your ass Faythe is supposed to be developing as a strong, intelligent woman who has the opportunity to change the status quo for all female were cats but she can t seem to keep her legs closed or be honest with the man she claims to love She can make the hard choices like handing over one of her own kind to be eaten but she can t say no to one guy while being committed to another Yes, I know that mistakes happen, that s not it, my issue is with how she has dealt with that mistake that sets my teeth on edge If you have feelings for another person then woman up and say so, don t continue to sneak around and rationalize your behavior by pretending your protecting someone from getting hurt bad..bad..kitty.Finally, if you re a collector then go ahead and get this book but don t expect too much If you re not then I would tell you to skip it.Just one chicks opinion,KatThis is a re post had to reload entire library

So, I gave the previous book, Prey 5 stars, but have dropped this one down to 4 There s one reason for this the bloody love triangle It s ridiculous and I know the whole thing will play out till the last book and yet I know who she will chose, I mean really it s no contest Even if you prefer the underdog ha or cat you still know exactly who Faythe will pick And it bugs me that it s being dragged out hurting everyoneI really detest love triangles But, now that I have gotten my So, I gave the previous book, Prey 5 stars, but have dropped this one down to 4 There s one reason for this the bloody love triangle It s ridiculous and I know the whole thing will play out till the last book and yet I know who she will chose, I mean really it s no contest Even if you prefer the underdog ha or cat you still know exactly who Faythe will pick And it bugs me that it s being dragged out hurting everyoneI really detest love triangles But, now that I have gotten my cryptic I didn t want to give spoilers whinge out the way, lets move on to the glowing 4 stars I did give Shift All 4 of which are because I love the fast pace and story and the addition of the Thunderbirds made the whole thingexciting I am dying to see how things turn out, and I another aspect of this series I love is just how much I hate the bad guy, Malone It isn t often that the bad guy evokes this kind of deep seated resentment in me, but Vincent has out done herself and really created a character you can t help but despise It s a strange thing to enjoy about a book, but I get so sick of bleh baddies, so having someone like Malone, really made me back Faythe and co , I really need to see that guy suffer Another good book, despite my whinge and I both look forward and dread reading the last book in the series it will mean it really is over

This was a great one to read as there was a lot of action going on and you are introduced to a new breed of shifter, the Thunderbirds, and finally Faythe has grown up enough to accept that if she is to be the Alpha she needs to make the hard decisions and live with the choices she has made This book is hard to review with out spoiling the storyline, but here are some random thoughts.I have never been a fan of Faythe s mother, but in the first part of this book she finally steps up and becomes t This was a great one to read as there was a lot of action going on and you are introduced to a new breed of shifter, the Thunderbirds, and finally Faythe has grown up enough to accept that if she is to be the Alpha she needs to make the hard decisions and live with the choices she has made This book is hard to review with out spoiling the storyline, but here are some random thoughts.I have never been a fan of Faythe s mother, but in the first part of this book she finally steps up and becomes the person we heard she was when she was Faythe s age, and how fun it is Manx seems like she is getting ready to select a mate and it is interesting who she seems leaning towards. It also in interesting how when someone like Malone wants power how evil they are willing to go to see things their way in the end I feel sorry for all those around him, his wife, kids, and enforcers They are in a tenuous state where if they don t go along with him and his plans it is the end of them, he will do whatever it takes to come out on top The whole Faythe Marc Jace love triangle is firmly established, neither guy is going to give her up Up until this book I was firmly in the camp of Marc, but now have changed to Jace Ethan s death and his tryst with Faythe have changed him into a better man, one who Marc can no longer discount I can t wait for the next book to see how it all settles out
