Bring back that lovin feelin Cause it s gonegonegoneAnd I can t go on, woah Seriously this was my mental sound track as I read this storyI love the Righteous Brothers I truly do but nearly 200 pages of the same song running through your brain over and overwell, let s me tell you it gets tedious after a whileactually it gets downright monotonous and dammit even my mental voice doesn t sing near as good as The Righteous BrothersLooking at current reviews for this book I Bring back that lovin feelin Cause it s gonegonegoneAnd I can t go on, woah Seriously this was my mental sound track as I read this storyI love the Righteous Brothers I truly do but nearly 200 pages of the same song running through your brain over and overwell, let s me tell you it gets tedious after a whileactually it gets downright monotonous and dammit even my mental voice doesn t sing near as good as The Righteous BrothersLooking at current reviews for this book I m not sure I shouldn t duck and run as I do this I ve put this off for a couple of days now thinking I might change my mind If you ve seen any of my reviews for the original series that this book spun off of than you know I loved without reservation the entire series Vasquez and James was such an absolute treat for me I devoured the books and wallowed in their wonderfulness Apparently I should have quite while I was ahead I m thinking maybe I should have stopped there but really how could I When this was written by an author that is a no questions asked must buy for me.Unfortunately for me this book failed The characters were flat The spark of attraction that seemed to begin between Brian and Jackie in Finding Jackie book 3 of Vasquez James just wasn t there for me There were some repetition issues that for me got in the way like the constant repetition of the fact that as well as being in love they both wanted a D s relationship This was repeated over and over in various ways but still the same message It was something that I wanted to feel through their actions and interactions and not simply be told over and over again There were glimmers here and there mostly towards the end of the story that made me feel potential for these two men but overall it just wasn t enough to save this story for me and to add to all that I found the mystery thriller aspect of the story to be predictable. While there were occasional moments that I enjoyed I have to admit that all in all my favorite thing was the cover I mean seriously look at that cover it s gorgeous and that man is so Jackie I don t need to look anywhere else for the perfect representation of that character I desperately wanted the story to be as beautiful as the cover and for me it just wasn t.At the end of it all I still love Lou Sylvre s writing and when the next book comes out I m going to be reading it because one not so great read in my eyes does not make me willing to give up reading an author who has taken me on five very incredible and emotional adventures not to mention creating one of the sexiest m m couples going. So, Ms Sylvre maybe we weremiss than hit this time but I have faith and I m crossing my fingers that for me the next one is a hit By the way did I mention how much I LOVE that cover

2.5 HeartsThe framework of this story is good it s the fleshing out bits that I took issue with I chose this book for obvious reasons and those reasons played only a bit part which, I admit, was disappointing, though not my primary quibble The redundancy and spoon feeding of minutiae is what sapped my enjoyment I will say if I d read this book as little as two years ago I likely would ve had a very different reaction, so bear that in mind A Shot of J B can be read as a stand alone, though it 2.5 HeartsThe framework of this story is good it s the fleshing out bits that I took issue with I chose this book for obvious reasons and those reasons played only a bit part which, I admit, was disappointing, though not my primary quibble The redundancy and spoon feeding of minutiae is what sapped my enjoyment I will say if I d read this book as little as two years ago I likely would ve had a very different reaction, so bear that in mind A Shot of JB can be read as a stand alone, though it seemed to be a spin off of an earlier series involving Luki Vasquez Brian is living in London and working his way up the ranks of Scotland Yard Jackie and he met when Jackie was still jailbait Brian was involved in rescuing him from a sociopath and they both left lasting impressions on one another They meet up again and carry on a brief long distance relationship prior to Jackie being accepted to a graduate program in London The secondary thriller storyline involves two women teaming up to study the effects of fear on the human psyche through a series of malevolent experiments Both of these women are whackadoodles and it s clear early on who they are and what the end game is which when coupled with the too tidy ending left me wanting. The good elements to this book are a long haired ginger MC, shibari, MANTIES, thriller aspects, sort of part of a series all things I like It came down to the writing style, a writing style I found mostly frustrating and had me skimming frequently ExampleHe followed his own instructions, took some deep breaths, got himself a glass of water and drank it down, stretched, then sat down with the letter and a pocket knife He cut the envelope neatly on one end and extracted the paper inside There s telling and there s showing and then there s overkill, overkill that usually involved sentences that stretched into paragraphs akin to the above topped off with stilted dialogue.I will say the sex was medium hot I could ve done with less labeling of power dynamics and I m not a fan of the sub being cast as perpetually in need of rescue and meek despite protestations to the contrary, but there is no doubt they are hot for each other Unfortunately, that wasn t enough to sustain my interest in the long run

A Shot of J B is the first book by Lou Sylvre that I ve read While I thought this story had potential, I didn t think it was really met I d still like to read the series that A Shot of J B is spun from , just so I can get some background on the characters and where they come from You don t need to read that series to follow this story, though A Shot of J B stands well enough, on its own At the start of the book, Brian and Jackie live on different continents Brian Harrison is working A Shot of JB is the first book by Lou Sylvre that I ve read While I thought this story had potential, I didn t think it was really met I d still like to read the series that A Shot of JB is spun from , just so I can get some background on the characters and where they come from You don t need to read that series to follow this story, though A Shot of JB stands well enough, on its own At the start of the book, Brian and Jackie live on different continents Brian Harrison is working for Scotland Yard, in London, where he has lived for the past 5 years He left the US after Jackie s rescue in Finding Jackie because he thought he was getting too attached to Jackie and vice versa Jackie was 16 at the time, and Brian 22 And that is a line that Brian will not cross Besides, Jackie needed to heal physically, mentally and emotionally from his ordeal So, Brian went as far away as he could But now, Jackie is 22 and about to start grad school and he s really come a long way And when they reconnect, Brian discovers that his draw toward Jackie never went away Jackie Vasquez is young, but he s seen things and experienced things that no one of any age should have to endure But he s strong and he s worked hard to heal and become a healthy young man Jackie is also fiercely independent and resistant to anything that would take that independence away But with Brian, Jackie finds that he is willing to give up control at least to a point Jackie is a sexual submissive and he not only craves that submission, he needs it And Brian is his counterpoint, the Dom who matches him so completely. And I loved that or the potential of it, anyway But we re told a lotthan we re shown, unfortunately, and Brian and Jackie seem to go in circles a lot about what they want from each other and their hopes of a D s relationship And I don t mean they wavered at all, they really didn t It s just that they kept repeating it, in some form or another until I just kind of wanted them to get on with it, already. And when Jackie moved to London to attend grad school, he and Brian never felt so far apart to me Brian s job was all consuming and while Jackie was busy with school, he was starting to feel like an afterthought He s young and being in a relationship with a detective takes a lot of fortitude and commitment that maybe Jackie wasn t prepared for And, to me, their connection suffered And so did my enjoyment of the story There were certainly things I enjoyed quite a lot I loved Brian and Jackie as characters and as a couple when they were together I loved that Brian practiced shibari, which can be so very beautiful I loved Jackie s resilience I loved that he loved both leather and lace I even liked the overall story and the thriller aspects, though it was somewhat predictable Oh, and I would be remiss is I didn t mention just how gorgeous I think the cover is.But there was a tendency for unimportant tasks, like getting ready for school or bed, or opening an envelope to be vastly over described and that, along with the repetitiveness of the writing tended to take me out of the narrative a bit I don t really need the minutia of their day described in great detail just to fill space, and that s how it seemed at times I think with another round of editing to tighten things up, the story could be a solid 4 4.5 stars But as it stands, I d give A Shot of JB an overall 3 stars

I adore Luki and Sonny and I think maybe Brian and Jackie suffered through comparison I was eager to read their story and they were a fascinating couple but there wasn t that instant love that I felt for Jackie s uncles The story seemed quite slow moving and sedate until very nearly the end when it exploded in to life I don t know whether there will beto come from Brian and Jackie but I do have a funny feeling that they could very easily grow on me.

WARNING if you haven t read at least up to book 3 in the Vasquez James series, this review can be spoilerish Also This story takes place BEFORE events in Because of Jade Just to verify up front This story with Brian and Jackie is 6 years after Finding Jackie and events to do with Jade have NOT taken place yet.I love that this is going to be its own series, and as with all of Lou s stories, felt like I was wrapped up in a comfortable, handmade blanket that left me feeling warm, cozy, a WARNING if you haven t read at least up to book 3 in the Vasquez James series, this review can be spoilerish Also This story takes place BEFORE events in Because of Jade Just to verify up front This story with Brian and Jackie is 6 years after Finding Jackie and events to do with Jade have NOT taken place yet.I love that this is going to be its own series, and as with all of Lou s stories, felt like I was wrapped up in a comfortable, handmade blanket that left me feeling warm, cozy, and happy sigh If you have read the James Vasquez series, you will recall that we were only given a teasing glimpse of the possibilities of a relationship between Jackie and Brian in Finding Jackie And, the fact that they both share a kink..except, well, Jackie only has the potential of submission, and Brian, as a fairly new Dom, removes himself from temptation and the innate connection he feels with Jackie upon first meeting him at only 16 yrs old to Brian s 22 years And he does it in quite a drastic way By moving all the way to London to follow his interest in becoming a member of Scotland Yard.It is good that we see them in the opening chapters meeting after all these years away from each other After Jackie is no longer jail bait , and has had the loving embrace of his uncle, the rest of his family, and therapy to heal from his trauma But, can Brian be sure Jackie isn t broken , being submissive due to fear and circumstances, not the innate naturalness of a healthy sub I love the awkwardness and really sweet way both of these guys reconnect The first tentative emails, and the way they have to go about getting each other s physical mailing address or cellphone when good ol former Boss and Uncle Luki refuses to give out personal information about anyone It made me smileI enjoyed this story due to the following The beauty ofartistic hand crafting, with Brian beginning to master Shibari Japanese rope work , and Jackie learning leather craft The visuals of this handiwork from both men are so much richer with this, bringing back memories of Sonny with his beautiful handmade dyes and fabric paintings and weaving. The BDSM element Pretty light in this story Which is a good thing in my opinion due to Jackie s past Appreciated the questioning of how much his submission is a product of abuse or just weakness I love that it wasn t an unrealistic fix and some effort was put in to the why or possible pre wiring of a submissive nature even before the abuse incidents. It was fascinating learning about geocaching And that it is a hobby many can get into worldwide I love the description of the clothing, when they prepare to go to a club The clothes that Jackie wears as a sub yummmm, self designed, buttery soft leather corset, and lace , and visualizing Brian as the Dom in black jeans and silk shirt with leather jacket. The Shibari rope work It sounds beautiful And Brian knits and crochets Yet he is not in any way lessened as a manly man smiles And animal lovers will enjoy Marley and his independent ways. The London foggy, marshy, damp, aged atmosphere gave this story a nice spooky quality, almost like an old gothic horror suspense novel images of Jack the ripper around the corner, in a dark, dank alleyway OooooohThis story had all the elements of a good suspense novel It starts out so that we, the reader, get a glimpse into the making of a criminal mind, then we get to follow both our MCs, and sit in suspense waiting for them to figure out what we, the reader, already suspect. There were good little twists and turns, and I almost wish it could ve been drawn out longer, withdetail, as there seemed to be a few little jumps in events that felt almost cut short, but I most definitely enjoyed this start to a new series, with visits from our previous, well loved characters, and the light BDSM twist with the possibilities of another generation of sleuths Most fun Also, this ends withof an HFN rather than an HEA, leaving room foradventures and personal growth with this couple.Highly recommended

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here 4.5 stars view spoiler I really like this series, I thoroughly enjoy Lou Sylvre writing style, while everyone might not like the lack of romance I enjoy it I think it s enough romance because the amount of love the guys have for each other and their families shines bright on the page I was so shocked to see this appear on the blog because I totally forgot about it coming out I immediately emailed Mel, and was hoping I get it first and I did I m so ecstatic that I did I loved every minute 4.5 stars view spoiler I really like this series, I thoroughly enjoy Lou Sylvre writing style, while everyone might not like the lack of romance I enjoy it I think it s enough romance because the amount of love the guys have for each other and their families shines bright on the page I was so shocked to see this appear on the blog because I totally forgot about it coming out I immediately emailed Mel, and was hoping I get it first and I did I m so ecstatic that I did I loved every minute of this book Jackie is definitely one of my favorite characters ever, and I was amazed at his strength, and determination seeing as what he went through He made sure he wasn t going to be a victim to no one and I appauld him for it Brian is the perfect guy, I like that he didn t second guess himself a lot, and what he said and put out in the world is how he felt The beginning of the book I kept thinking where is Jade, but I totally forget this is the past where as Jade s book was the future I plan on rereading that as soon as I finish this review LOL I got to see Luki Sonny a couple who I love for everything that they went through Brian has moved to London, to finish studying and working trying to be a better constable I liked that conversation he had with Luki, I thought it was endearing, honest and people should respect Brian for his reasoning on things I would have never guessed we would have a Dom Brian but I was shocked, thrilled and coping with his ways of doing things His reintroduction to Jackie you almost can see if you closed your eyes They just work together I fouind in this book Lou s writing really didn t change but maybe I see it as a little softer She focuses on them first before the suspense and thriller I appreciated that They are definitely a different couple then Luki Sonny and I liked it.The crimes were different, and I actually enjoyed the coming together of all the whys, and how s of the crime All in all, it has become one of my favorite books of 2015 Why not 5 stars then Well I felt like the ending was a little rushed, all the pieces fell into place wonderfully but I would have loved to see some things prolonged as far as finding the accomplice, and the whole recover rescue aspect I also wanted an epilogue of what s next for these two I mean I know what happens because of reading the previous story but I want to know from their perspective I really did love this book hide spoiler

I m already a fan of the universe Lou Sylvre has built with her Vasquez and James series so I was excited to learn that she is writing a spin off series featuring characters from that series Jackie and Brian I love series, and next generation spin offs. The title A Shot of J B works on a couple of levels It s not only Brian s favourite drink, but is also their initials As with all of Lou s work, this was a very smooth and lyrical read I got sucked into the story and invested in the characte I m already a fan of the universe Lou Sylvre has built with her Vasquez and James series so I was excited to learn that she is writing a spin off series featuring characters from that series Jackie and Brian I love series, and next generation spin offs. The title A Shot of JB works on a couple of levels It s not only Brian s favourite drink, but is also their initials As with all of Lou s work, this was a very smooth and lyrical read I got sucked into the story and invested in the characters very quickly Part romance, part detective action drama, this has a bit of everything but comes together as a very integrated whole I also enjoyed the change in location as a lot of the action takes place in the UK, and the research that has gone into the story While it s definitely Jackie and Brian s story, there are still appearances from Luki and Sonny, and the introduction of new characters I loved Brian s cat, Marley, and their other new addition to their family but that one is a spoiler so not mentioning it here Brian and Jackie s relationship grows over time although their attraction is immediate, and I thought the way Lou handled it was very believable Her guys are always very loving, and respect and trust each other I really like that about them.Lou certainly knows how to rack up the tension, and the bad guy in this is really disturbing, but realistically so Like in all good detective stories, the clues were there, but it s only as things come together that the reader puts it all together, and like Brian, hopes like hell it s not already too late An early night I had planned became a lot later, as I had to keep reading to see what happened next Another five star story, and a great start to a new series More please
